Senior Policy Manager (Digital) – Jakarta

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality development program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position :

Under limited direction, the Senior Policy Manager, has a critical role in providing advice and research, as well as project support to the Ambassador and all A-Based members of the Economic and Trade section on issues related to Indonesia’s digital economy and other economic issues relevant to the bilateral relationship as required. The position pro-actively monitors and analyses developments, and develops, manages, and expands Embassy contacts.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead coordination on digital policy issues across the Embassy.
  • Monitor and provide comprehensive and timely research, analysis, reporting and advice on economic issues including in relation to the digital economy.
  • Draft to final level standard the full range of written correspondence and reporting tasks of a senior policy officer.
  • Inform the strategic engagement and representational outreach of the Australian Embassy with the Indonesian Government, including problem-solution identification.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts within the Indonesian Government and Industry, research institutions and NGOs as they relate to digital issues.
  • As directed, manage logistical and administrative arrangements for Embassy events.
  • Attend and represent the Australian Government at events, such as conferences and seminars in Indonesia and facilitate the participation of Indonesian officials in such events outside of the country, as appropriate.
  • With minimal supervision, organise programs for Australian ministerial, parliamentary, and official visitors to Indonesia and official Indonesian visitors to Australia; organise meetings and provincial visits for the Ambassador and A-based officers, with minimal supervision; participate in these programs as required.
  • Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation on official calls, and meetings, and translate documents and reports as required.
  • Use IT resources to ensure the efficient management of documentation.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently, exercise good judgement and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to identify issues that are relevant to Australia in Indonesia’s digital policy process.
  • An understanding of digital economy issues and related Indonesian policies and demonstrated ability to take complex policies and effectively communicate the implications to both Indonesia and Australia context.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce timely and well-targeted reporting in English, both in response to tasking and on topical issues as assigned.
  • Experience in working across teams and superior ability to manage resources in a busy and varied environment and prioritise a busy workload with great attention to detail to produce high quality outcomes.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills including effectiveness in consultation, advocacy, and liaison. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop strong professional networks.
  • Working knowledge of the Australian Government’s digital, economic and trade related objectives in Indonesia and a knowledge of the role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in relation to advancing Australia’s interests in Indonesia.
  • Tertiary qualifications are essential.
  • Experience working in digital or private sector (start-up) is a plus.
